Visual Cues and Signaling Principle

While designing your presentation you shall help your audience to focus on the most important part of the slide.

Lets examine this simple example: a slide with four red apples. The focus shall be directed to the second apple from the left. This apple is special and I want the audience to know that I am talking about this indeed special apple.

Border or Frame

The first option to point to this special apple would be to draw a border or frame around this one.

Arrow

The second option could be to use an arrow that would be pointing to our special apple.

Color Contrast

We may also use the power of color contrast to make our special apple standing out from the rest of fruits.

One way is to make the special object more visible but you may also make the other objects less visible. The same effect could be acheived this way.

Size

The diffeence in the size could also be a tool to make a contrast and make one object stading out.

(Laser) Pointer

If you haven't prepared you slides in advance using described methods, help you audience by using laser pointer avaialble in slideshow mode in PowerPoint

There are several ways to activate Laser Pointer in slideshow mode and one of the is just to press Ctrl and L on your keyboard

It consits of five slides and the same rectangle is placed in different positions through slides. The Morph transition is added and that is it. The next one is a bit ehnaced version. The rectangle is moving and changing color at the same time. Again it it done in PowerPoint using couple slides and Morph transition. There is more that Morph can do. Shapes could morph into other shapes. But for that you need to help PowerPoint and tell that on two slides it is actually the same object. The shape name may be changed in the Selection Pane Add two exlamation marks in the front of the shape name on each slide. This is the effect

Don't be afraid of the space

One main message per slide. Reduce number of elements on your slides. Whitespace, called sometimes negative space is very important part of your slide. You don't need to fill every spot on your slide. Let the slide breathe. Help the audience to identify what is important. Don't be afraid of that space on your slide. Do not be worry that your slide will look like empty one. Avoid temptation to add more and more elements to your slide.
